Meet Etiquette

Be Prepared:

Gymnasts, eat a healthy breakfast (or meal) including a combination of protein and carbohydrates.

Double check your gym bag and be sure to include a low-sugar, high-energy, mess-free snack, such as an energy bar, and water.

Be Early:

Allow time to get lost and found again.

Give your athlete time to find his/her way around and get comfortable before starting warm up and competition.

Be Ready to:

drop your child off and say good-bye! Make sure you take care of all well-wishing and planning (e.g. where to meet after the meet) before your child enters the competitive area, a.k.a. "the floor".

be a spectator and supporter only. Do not expect to communicate with your child until after awards.

Gymnasts stay with their coaches through the entire meet through the awards:

Gymnasts must stay through awards ceremony. Arrange for your child to ride with another parent if you cannot stay.

Gymnasts may not leave the competitive floor without permission until the last competitor dismounts.

Gymnasts must ask permission to leave the event for any reason, or to have a snack.

Gymnasts are encouraged to be team players. Once their event or meet is finished, they should watch and encourage their teammates.

Parents stay in the area designated for spectators:

Only competitive and USAG professionals are allowed on the competitive floor.

Please keep young siblings (as well as adults) under control and away from competitive area.

Refrain from all communication with the athletes, meet officials (judges), or head table during the meet:

You may go through your coaches if you need to communicate something to an athlete.

Go to your coaches with any questions during the meet or awards; refrain from approaching the officials.

Refrain from coaching before, during or after the meet:

Before: Trust your professional coaches to coach your child. Offer support (e.g. “Do your best!) not specifics, which may confuse him/her.

During: Offer supportive cheering for all team members, and refrain from coaching from the stands or screaming. Keep it general and positive!

After: Support, not specifics. Let your son/daughter relax and lead the discussion. Share in his/her joy, or console him/her in his/her disappointment.

Keep all comments positive when clubs, gymnasts, coaches, judges, or keep your comments to yourself:

Expect to see others with different philosophies, techniques, standards, focus, and rules.

Refrain from public criticism.

Refrain from flash photography, as it is dangerous to the athletes.
